ΜΥΘΙΣΤΟΡΗΜΑ,
Today Aenaon Publications publishes the new novel by Val O 'Teli Under the shadow of Athos
«Time is uninterrupted. Its pedals take you only
forward, regardless of how great your will is to move them backwards, to
correct your course. Greedy, it devours constantly, incessantly – without ever
returning anything.
Did you have the time to live? Did you steal from it
even a tiny piece of what it took from you? Stay on the old saddle of your own
bicycle till the end. Hold on tight to the handlebars and enjoy the leap over
the cliff. Don’t leave any joy to it».
He read the text that would accompany the photo of the
old bicycle one more time. It was true that some pictures did not need any
description whatsoever. They were just absolutely perfect. But, for Victor
Kyriakopoulos, the pen and the lens were so intricately connected that they
could not exist autonomously. As a matter of fact, his journey to Skiathos had
only started today. He smiled happily, put up the collar of his jacket and
started walking briskly towards the town. His eyes embraced all around that
glorious sky of the twilight.
UNDER THE SHADOW
OF ATHOS
( a novel)
SUMMARY
Skiathos 2011. The famous photographer Victor
Kyriakopoulos comes from abroad to the island of Papadiamantis in order to
document with his lens the known and unknown aspects of the place, in view of
his next professional project. There, under the shadow of Athos (shadow-skia in
Greek + Athos= Skiathos), we follow him in his wanderings around the island,
discovering sides of the Greek reality and becoming witnesses of a course which
moves on two levels:
The first is that of artistic agony, which seeks ways
to find expression in a place gifted by nature, but simultaneously trapped in
its fame as a tourist destination.
The second is that of the hero’s internal quest,
anxiously looking for answers to the great questions of human existence.
Through his eyes and, mainly, through his lens we
watch, as if in a film, the society of men in all forms of expression and,
inevitably, recognize ourselves or parts of us in the plethora of characters
our hero meets and socializes with. Parallel to this, we become familiar with
places and locations on the island which compose the greater picture our hero
wishes to build, as well as parts of the island’s history through his
wanderings in places where the ordinary traveler does not attempt to reach,
documenting at the same time the habits and customs of the Greek culture and
tradition.
The end of this journey is marked by an unexpected
event, which in its tragedy guides the hero to the answers that remained pending
for years, turning his way back into a liberating voyage of self-awareness and
internal peace.
There, under the shadow of Athos, on the return ship,
Victor Kyriakopoulos acknowledges for the first time the power of human nature
to force the light onto the darkness.
